About Our Program

At Sharpen Recovery, we walk with individuals to build recovery capital—the personal strengths and external supports that empower lasting sobriety and a meaningful life.

What Is Sharpen

Sharpen Recovery is a supportive recovery housing community where you're sober, seen, and supported. With structure, peer support, and leaders who’ve walked the same road, you'll find the connection and accountability you've been longing for. It’s a place to live for a season—so you’re equipped to thrive for a lifetime.

Program Features

Affordable

Our program is more affordable than nearly all other recovery housing options on the market. Fees range from $595–$695/month depending on location. As a 501(c)(3), we’re also supported by generous philanthropic partners who believe in this life-changing work, which enables us to operate with prices at this level. We intentionally set our fees at a rate that requires participant investment, but also allows them to save while in the program.

Accredited

Accredited by TROHN (Texas Recovery-Oriented Housing Network), the state affiliate of NARR (National Alliance for Recovery Residences), we align with an extensive list of care standards and are held to a high level of service for those who trust us to care for them. We pursue this voluntary accreditation because we value the safety of our participants—and studies show that accredited organizations have better success rates than those that aren’t.

Seamless Intake Process

We know addiction can lead to crisis and put people in a tough spot. That’s why we’ve built a Placement Department to make the intake process seamless and quick. Life in addiction is hard—getting help shouldn’t be. If you need support, reach out now, and we’ll walk with you speedily into recovery.

Preparation for Life Beyond

Sharpen isn’t a permanent housing solution. Everything we do is designed to prepare participants for life after Sharpen. By the time someone completes our Stage Program, they’re equipped with tools, habits, and support systems for lasting sobriety. We also encourage staying connected after leaving—giving back to others what we have been given.

Recovery Capital Focused

Recovery capital = the internal strengths and external resources that help individuals successfully sustain sobriety. We’re all about strategically helping participants build these resources—social, physical, spiritual, and economic recovery capital for success.

Multiple Locations, One Community

We operate houses throughout Greater Houston, but the Sharpen community is close and tightly connected. Participants in each house build strong bonds—and those connections extend across all our homes. Weekly gatherings bring everyone together to celebrate success, share stories, and strengthen a shared culture of recovery.

Christ-Centered

Our faith shapes who we are and how we serve. We believe the Bible reveals God’s truth and love, and that through Jesus, we find redemption and new life. This faith influences our team, our programming, and the culture within our homes. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and beliefs who meet our intake criteria. Each person’s journey is unique, and we aim to walk alongside them with compassion, respect, and hope.

Personalized, Data-Driven Guidance

We strategically leverage technology and systems to collect data on each participant’s activity at every point of their journey at Sharpen. This allows us to respond with personalized support. The information we collect helps us celebrate progress and identify gaps in recovery capital so we can provide targeted support. Our investment in data gives us an edge in guiding those who entrust us with their care in order to treat this disease.

Leaders with Lived Experience

Research supports what we’ve seen firsthand: leaders with lived experience are powerful guides. Many of our team members once battled addiction themselves and now lead others to sobriety. Each house has multiple leaders who have overcome addiction—offering both example and guidance for those just beginning the journey.

Metro Bus Access (At Most Locations)

Transportation matters. Whether it’s getting to work, AA meetings, or the grocery store, most of our homes are placed in convenient locations near Metro bus routes. Many participants come to us without a vehicle—often lost during addiction—and use public transportation as a temporary tool while rebuilding their lives.

Five-Stage Process (I. - V.)

We’ve thoughtfully designed a multi-stage process to help participants build recovery capital and grow in the areas that matter most. From the Forge stage to the Sharp stage, participants obtain IDs, get a 12-step sponsor, find employment, begin saving money, and prepare for a stable, sober life. See below for more about this key feature of Sharpen.

12-Step Based

We follow the proven 12-step process of Alcoholics Anonymous. Our participants attend nearby meetings, work the steps with a sponsor, and engage with the broader recovery community. We see the 12 steps as the “medication” for the disease of addiction—guiding participants to acknowledge their struggles, make amends, and establish a new way of living with the support of others.

Sharpen Stages

To make the process clear and actionable, we guide each participant through a five-stage pathway we call Sharpen Stages. These stages represent a structured journey of recovery capital development.

Each stage marks a new level of growth. The process isn’t time-based—it’s action-based, allowing participants to move at their own pace.

The stages include priorities such as obtaining identification, opening a bank account, working the 12 steps, exploring a relationship with Jesus, and developing tools and habits that support long-term recovery.

Testimonials

"For years, I battled addiction and despair, trying to recover on my own and failing every time. It wasn’t until I truly surrendered, to God and to the process that everything changed. Sharpen Recovery became the foundation for my healing.”

Sharpen Participant

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What types of participants are a good fit for Sharpen Recovery?
We serve adults committed to sobriety who are ready for structured, community-based recovery housing. Ideal candidates are transitioning from treatment, incarceration, or crisis and are looking for long-term change in a values-driven, peer-supported environment.
  • What sets Sharpen Recovery apart from other recovery homes?
We go beyond providing a bed. Sharpen offers a multi-staged recovery process, experienced staff, and a Christ-centered community rooted in accountability and connection—giving participants the tools to build stability that lasts.
  • Is there an application process, and how quickly can someone be admitted?
Yes. We have a clear intake process that includes a brief screening to ensure our program is the right fit. We aim to move quickly and communicate closely with both clients and referrers during transitions. Depending on the application, we can provide a move-in within 1-3 days.
  • Do you coordinate with treatment centers or other care providers during the transition?
Absolutely. We value collaboration and are happy to coordinate with treatment teams, case managers, or discharge planners to ensure a smooth, supportive handoff into our program.
  • Is Sharpen Recovery faith-based, and does that affect admission?
While our program is Christ-centered, we welcome participants of all faith backgrounds—or none—as long as they’re open to the community, values, and structure we provide. Faith is foundational, but not forced.
